Adam Driver is an intense guy, something that could work in his favor when he makes his Saturday Night Live hosting debut this weekend.
Promos for the episode already poked fun at his actorly intensity — and the emotions of his Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ character Kylo Ren — by having him express his insecurity about the hosting gig before a panicking Kate McKinnon successfully encouraged him to cheer up. The gag worked, partly because of Driver’s commitment to the bit, a good sign of what’s to come on the episode ahead.
This commitment is what proves Driver could make a fine host despite not having much experience in comedy: The Girls actor is typically cast in dramatic roles, and even the comedic titles in which he does appear are at the darker end of the spectrum, like This is Where I Leave You and While We’re Young. Hosting SNL will be an good test to see if he can handle full-on comedy — and his especially animated acting style hints that he’ll pass with flying colors.
Chris Stapleton will provide the evening’s music and, if his previous televised performances are any indication, will surely wow with his brand of old-school country: Back in November, he teamed up with Justin Timberlake for a terrific duet at the Country Music Awards, where he won the awards for Best New Artist, Best Male Vocalist, and Album of the Year.
